I’ve got to admit that when I was watching Long Long Time Ago, I was expecting lots of Singaporean jokes that will leave me with a painful stomach, just like the wildly popular (and extremely hilarious) Ah Boys to Men. After all, it’s a Jack Neo movie, so it’s a reasonable expectation, right?
But, well, I was wrong: the number of jokes seemsto be less here, and the really funny ones are when the characters converse in Malay, which I didn’t understand so I’ve to rely on the subtitles.
Oh, wait—characters conversing in Malay? Being an extremely authentic film, does that mean that our grandparents, or great grandparents, know Malay as well, even when they’re Chinese?
Well, yes. And that’s why all Gen-Y Singaporeans should really watch it, because it just tells us so much about our past that it might just change how we view our world completely.
If you’re a Singaporean or Malaysian Gen-Yer, you would most probably have heard from your parents or grandparents about their days in kampong, and how they have to use basins when it was raining, and how well they got along with their fellow villagers. These stories seem a little far-fetched to us, since we’re all used to HDB flats, our smartphones and the Internet.
In the film, you’ll get to see how our parents and grandparents have survived the days when things weren’t simple: when Singapore gained its independence, people were skeptical about Singapore’s future (and they have good reasons to) and wondered whether they should remain there or move to Malaysia. You’ll get to see how real secret societies used to be then, and how the country is changed from a lawless, dangerous society to one that is highly efficient and safe.
You know, when the elderly kept on telling us how bad life was back then and how they had to work hard in order to survive, we used to just think, “Alamak, it’s nothing compared to the C’s I’ve just got in my examinations”. But after watching the movie, many would most likely be thinking, “OMG, it was that bad? And here I am, crying because my Internet connection is slow?”
To be honest, this is the reason why youngsters nowadays are taking things for granted, because they’ve not been through those moments. And the movie does what Jack Neo always does best: giving us an experience instead of just a movie.
I don’t know about you, but now, I’m fully appreciative of the fact that I’ve got shelter above my head.
