When it comes to JB, only two things will come to Singaporeans: eating and shopping. It’s completely understandable since the stuff there is relatively cheaper due to the strong Singapore dollars, and they’ve got some of the best foods in the region.
But ask any 新山人 (people from JB) and they’ll tell you that JB is more than just food and shopping, and more than just City Square and KSL mall. There’re many other interesting places to visit, and here’re five that you should really go when you’re free!
And just so you know, if you don’t drive, you can easily get a private car via Uber or GrabTaxi (both are available there). Alternatively, go to the taxi station below JB Sentral. These are the best ways to get around JB without being ripped off by unethical taxi drivers.
Desaru Beach
The best way to describe Desaru is this: it’s like Sentosa with half the price. It’s a beautiful and long beach with resorts that cost less than those in Sentosa, but essentially, it’s still considered expensive in Malaysia, so you’ll see more tourists than Malaysians. Still, it’s one of the hot spots for Singaporeans wanting a nearby resort at an affordable price, so make it your next vacation!
Angry bird Activity Park
So you think there’s only Legoland in JB—you’re wrong. Angry Birds have landed in JB as well, and kids would go apeshit there…though the adults might feel really left out, because this place is really catered to kids.
Kuso Trick Art Gallery
Think Trick Eye Museum in Singapore, but minus the high price, the large area and the easy accessibility, and you’ll have Kuso Trick Art Gallery. The entry fee is less than SGD $8 (RM22 to be precise), and it’s relatively a small area, but hey: you get what you paid for, right?
Komtar JBCC
Okay, this is essentially shopping and eating, but since many people didn’t know about this (I didn’t until I was in JB last week…and I go there often!), you need to know this. It’s actually just next to City Square, but has tons of shops that are similar to Singapore. But hey, who can complain about a new mall? Moreover a mall that is more affordable than malls in Singapore?
Pulai Waterfall
It’s all concrete here in Singapore, and if you like nature, Pulai Waterfall is perfect for you. Located just about 20 minutes drive from the checkpoint, you get to see real waterfall and can even swim on it. How cool is that? Very.
