Do you have memories of fighting fishes? If so, you’re just as old as me—if not, here’s how old people like us used to kill time before iPhones and iPad took over the world.
Many years ago (actually, it wasn’t that bad—maybe about fifteen or twenty years ago?), there were MANY shops around Singapore selling freshwater fishes. People were then obsessed with having a tank filled with fishes in their homes, and would cry when one of the fishes died unexpectedly.
Then one day, a fad suddenly occurred: fighting fishes.
Commonly known just as fighting fishes or 打架鱼, they’re actually Siamese Fighting Fishes. If you can’t remember how they look like, here’s a recap.
You can’t keep two similar fishes together, or they’ll just fight each other to the death. Also, they have to be kept alone, usually in a jar as people then could not afford a large tank just for them.
Some of us would get the black fighting fish, which is relatively cheaper but not as pretty as the Siamese Fighting Fishes.
You know, here’s one thought that occurs to me now: if this was still popular, and people posted videos of their fishes fighting online to the death, how would the Internet react? Would online self-righteous people make noise, or would it just be another fad? I think it’s the former.
It’s really pretty nice to live in the 90s, when the only noise we heard was from our friends.
