I’m sure all of us have heard of the rare snow in Taiwan, the crazy plunge to 16°C in Bangkok and how Hong Kong is shivering at 3°C. The extra-cold winters these few years really do make us doubt global warming and suspect that a new Ice Age is approaching.
With Malaysia just next to Thailand, there are rumours that Malaysia will be dropping to extreme low temperatures in February, forcing Malaysians to celebrate their Chinese new year in jackets and sweaters. This is not new though, as due to the monsoon winds, certain parts of Malaysia do experience annual dips in temperature to as low as 20°C. However, looking at the trend this year, Malaysia might just make a new record. Last year, Kelantan, a northern state of Malaysia, experienced 16°C temperatures. The same can be expected this year, if not lower.
If you still remember what your geography teacher taught you, you would know that the northeastern winds originate in China, and hence is dry and chilly. Guangzhou and Shenzhen in southern China have seen the rare appearance of snow, so if China is freezing all over right now, we can expect the monsoon winds to be cold as well. However, it is not very possible to predict the temperature from more than 2 weeks ahead, so nobody is sure whether our Chinese new year would be a chilly one.
If the monsoon winds are a bit more determined this year, we might just see a cold Malaysia for once. And if Malaysia is cold, hopefully, Singapore would be spared from the heat too. However, all of these are just speculations, just in case you already have one arm in your jacket. Do remember that no matter what, Singapore is still on the equator. And that place is hot.
Its always good to stay positive though, so just prepare your jackets!
