A big part about festivals are the songs, be it National Day or Chinese New Year. However, some CNY songs are so overplayed, you are just sick and tired and want to jam a pencil up your ears whenever you hear them.

恭喜恭喜 Gongxi, Gongxi ‘Greetings, Greetings’
每条大街小巷~~ If you can continue the song without a single slip in the lyrics, you’ve probably heard this song one too many times. The song in itself is catchy and the tune is well written. Unfortunately, Mediacorp is determined to destroy this song by making actors who cannot really sing cover it every single year and making the same MV over and over again with the same people but different hairstyles.
Therefore, if you switch to Vasantham central every time this comes on, we’re with you.

春 Chun ‘Spring’
This song isn’t very catchy in itself. However, it also suffers from the same tragedy as #1. Except this time, it’s the news anchors doing the singing. Can’t they just focus on their job?

恭喜你发财 Gongxi Ni Facai ‘Wishing You Prosperity’
AHHHH ANDY LAU… This CNY classic sung by Andy is a favourite for many Singaporeans. Fortunately, this song isn’t included in the “to ruin” list in Mediacorp.

迎春花 Ying Chun Hua ‘Flowers That Welcome The Spring’
Another song that you will hear where ever you go. Also often accompanied with flowers of all kinds of colours. Maybe the shop owners believe that this will make us spend more money.

万年红 Wan Nian Hong ‘Countless Years of Blessings’
Always heard on TV advertisements.

贺新年 He Xin Nian ‘New Year Blessings’
Catchy tune and a favourite of the kids. It’s not an uncommon sight to see a kid running around screaming the song. Although you are sick of the song, the sight of the kid will still manage to make you smile, unless you are the mom. Then you’ll wish they’d shut up.

拜大年 Bai Da Nian ‘Big new year’
Another song that you associate Dong Su Hua’s face with. Ohh damn.

新年好 Xinnian Hao ‘Happy New Year’
The fast beats of this song strangely influences you to function in fast motion.

春天来了 Chun Tian Lai Le ‘Spring is here’
This song sounds like a children’s lullaby.

富贵花开迎新年 Fu Gui Hua Kai Ying Chun Tian ‘Adenium opens to welcome spring’
A happy tune with a message reminding you to cherish your time. But like all great songs, overplaying is the cause to its demise.

財神到 Cai Shen Dao ‘Here comes the fortune God’
Okay, this one, pass.
