What would you do if you’re thirty years old with a degree, earns a comfortable income and suddenly, your parent pass away, leaving a hawker stall unattended? Would you quit your job and get your hands dirty to take over the hawker stall, or would you continue with your job?
Thirty-year-old Lee Li Ting decided to do the former.
Ms Lee, a Malaysian from JB, graduated from an Australia university. Since then, she has been working in Singapore as an accountant, drawing about $3,000 a month. With the exchange rate, she was technically drawing RM9,000 a month—a high amount for a thirty-year-old.
But after working for six years, she got the news that her father has passed away, leaving his hawker stall selling kuih empty. She then made the decision to quit her job and go back to JB to take over the stall—despite her mother’s advice against it.
Her decision is due to two reasons: firstly, she did not want her mother to be alone, and secondly, she didn’t want her father’s kiuh to be gone forever.
Because of this, she has been seeing less of her husband as they work different hours. Her husband, too, tried to convince her out of it but she persisted. She remembers that her father has used to work hard in the stall to support her and her three brothers, and now that she is working in the stall, she finally understood the his pain.
Because of her age, people tend to look down on her, asking her questions like, “Do you make this kuih yourself?” Once, she recalled, someone insulted her as he requested for many packages of chilli when he just bought one kuih, and said that he had a lot of money so she should do what he requested.
But Ms Lee is not giving up. She intended to expand the business, and make her father proud.
If you were her, would you do the same thing?
