Which Singaporean in his right mind would travel overseas without having food on his mind? We love food, and we live our lives searching for that one amazing food stall that’s going to keep us going back again and again. Yes, even when we’re overseas.

Kuala Lumpur is a shopping and food paradise, especially to us Singaporeans who absolutely love that fact simply because of the exchange rate. Now, we won’t claim to be an expert on this, but after combining research and some of our own experiences, we’ve managed to come up with 8 best places you must definitely visit when you’re in KL, because if you’ve not, it’s just going to be a wasted trip.

Marufuku Udon @ Jaya One
Location: 72A, Jalan University, Seksyen 13, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia

You’ll find it weird that you’re going to KL for Japanese food, but seriously, once you’ve tried this, you might not want to eat at Japanese restaurants in Singapore anymore. They’re known for their Udon, which has converted many non-believers into Udon lovers, but the other items on their menu like Tori Karaage and dessert are raved about by patrons as well. And the best thing is, it’s affordable and a meal there can easily cost less than 10RM.

Rojak Mustaffa Chendol & Rojak
Location: Petaling Jaya (North) Jalan SS 2/5, Taman Bahagia, Malaysia

The amazing thing about eating in Malaysia is that it brings you back to the past, where you get a different experience eating at the roadside watching the cars drive past. Now, how does a plate of mamak- style rojak and a bowl of cendol to wash everything down at a roadside stall sound to you? We thought it sounded heavenly! Especially in a hot and humid country like Malaysia.

Restoran Yap Hup Kee
Location: 45, Jalan Brunei Barat, Off Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur 55100

One thing I really love about KL, or Malaysia in general is the Chee Cheong Fun. Unlike ours which is doused in sauce only, except for one at Jurong West, theirs is a combination of chee cheong fun and yong tau foo, the best of both world, I’ll say. If you’re in KL visit this restoran which is said to serve one of the best chee cheong fun in KL. Douse your chee cheong fun with curry, or do what I usually do and order it dry with sweet sauce and deep fried yong tau foo at the side.

Restaurant Foh Foh (和和茶餐室)
Location: 95-97, Jalan SS 15/4B, Kuala Lumpur 47500

How does a plate of delicious, fragrant fried rice with a fried egg and oozy yolk sound to you? Awesome? Now, how does it sound if that plate of goodyness is available for as low as RM 5.50? Sounds even better, right?! You’ll not want to miss this place for this simple but oh-so-satisfying plate of fried rice. Serious.

Warung Rindu Nasi Lemak Panas
Location: Jalan Kubur, Off Jalan Pantai Dalam, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur 59200

If you’re a fan of nasi lemak, here’s something that might just give Power Nasi Lemak in Singapore a run for their money. We’ve heard that their sambal is different (sweeter) and combines marvelously with the fragrant rice, and their fried quail comes especially well recommended. Notice we said fried quail, not fried quail egg hor, so don’t go there and malu.

Sze Ngan Chye roadside (Takeaway only)
Location: In front of a textile shop along busy Petaling Street

The address might be a bit ambiguous, but trust me, you won’t miss them, not with the queues and smells. Instead of eating cup noodles in your hotel room, bring a whole duck back to share among everybody. I was lucky enough to be introduced to this awesome, salty duck that doesn’t seem to smell like the usual roasted duck, so duck-haters who dislike the ‘duck’ smell might just fall in love with this. They have a Restoran in Kepong, but because I’ve not tried there before, I’ll stick to this humble stand instead.

Restoran Tuck Cheong
Location: No. 29, Jalan Kanchil, Pudu 55100 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Claimed to be the best road side dim sum in Pudu, you must never miss this place for amazing dim sum. Look at the picture and tell us you’re not drooling right now? Cheap, fresh and fluffy, it’s said you must reach early before everything is gone.

Yut Kee Restaurant (镒记)
Location: 1, Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Known for their amazing Hainanese Pork chop, it was their Roti Babi that really caught our attention. Imagine this: French toast stuffed with pulled pork and onions. Doesn’t that just sound so…ravishing?
