4 Ways to Pretend You’re in Bali without physically traveling there

Many people say Bali is more than a mere tourist destination – it’s a state of mind.

It’s proverbial paradise. And although there’s nothing quite like ACTUALLY visiting this beautiful island yourself, it’s not really like most of us can simply pack up and fly to Bali whenever we feel like it. Sad face.

Luckily, us Malaysians do have some other options to not only help us de-stress, but also experience a tourist’s taste of Bali, without even leaving the homeland.

So here you have it – four simple ways us Malaysians can ‘visit Bali, kinda’.

1. Book yourself a massage

Balinese Massage

Some argue that a trip to Bali wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a traditional Balinese massage.

Although most massages outside Bali are pricier, there can be some great deals on offer if only you keep your eyes out for them. Our suggestion is to run a search on Groupon for Balinese massages – there always seem to be heaps of promotions on offer.

They’ll have you closing your eyes and picturing yourself dancing through green rice fields with frangipani in your hair. Something like that.

2. Find yourself some Indonesian specialties

Nasi Penyet

From gado-gado to bakso, Indonesian food is a yummy class of its own. And we Malaysians are lucky to have a great selection of Indonesian restaurants under our noses.

Two examples: Bumbu Bali (Puchong) or Naughty Nuris (Hartamas) – popular restaurants that mimic the dark, tropical interiors of traditional Balinese eating houses.

Those who prefer eating at home can search up Indonesian food on delivery services like Foodpanda. Popular picks: Dapur Penyet or Penyet Express .

3. Drive out to where it’s green

Padi Fields

Just the mention of ‘Bali’ usually make images of greenery, Ubud paddy fields and lush jungles pop into our heads.

Thankfully, Malaysia is filled with tropical spots that are every bit as gorgeous as some of Bali’s – and not quite as well known.

My personal favourite is Sekinchan, loved for its beautiful green rice paddies. Just drive about one and a half hours from KL and you’ll be the envy of all of Instagram.

Cameron Highlands can also give Ubud’s tea plantations a run for its money. Both are equally stunning!

4. Locate a Balinese style villa

Finding a beautiful, wooden villa for a weekend is your best chance at immersing yourself in some Balinese-style paradise.

And again, luckily Malaysia has a number of amazing options courtesy of Agoda. Check out the two below:

May this post inspire you to escape the bustle of everyday life, Bali-style.

And if the above only feeds your wanderlust (oops), maybe the only cure for you is to visit the real Bali itself. You can get some decent flight deals after all: Expedia or CheapAir.
